“Joint and Muscular Injury is not all about the, Recovery Rehabilitation”

Joint and Muscular Injury is not all about the Recovery Rehabilitation

“Joint and Muscular Injury is not all about the, Recovery and Rehabilitation,” this may seem a strange statement from me , as a lot of my patients will state, to them I am all about the wellbeing, the recovery, rehabilitation and helping them get back to being the best that they can be.

“Times have changed,  as we have all found out, for a lot of people the concerns of longer waiting lists for surgery for Hip and knee replacements has not been the greatest of news some waiting as long as 35weeks and in some cases longer.”

This creates additional concerns and problems for the patient , the main being how to keep  MOBILE,  how to cope with further PAIN , how to deal with further DETERIATION . A combination of these factors can have a serious impact on the Physical Physiological and Psychological wellbeing of the individual.

So lets break down these :

Physical

How will this present itself to you  ?

This means the functions, that go on in your body  aided by nerve and blood function to your muscles the brain, that affect your Proprioception, you may find an inability to move smoothly or as I explain to my patients ” They are unable  to have Pain Free Fluid Movement” muscles shorten (tighten) so less flexibility , this can cause problems while sleeping or in a lot of cases lack of sleeping , pain and stiffness on waking making it difficult to get moving in the mornings, getting in and out of chairs putting on shoes, all these things are because the muscles are not supple , the need to keep muscles supple is clear. If muscles are supple then you have a better range of motion, less pain and better function, by keeping muscles supple it makes for a better outcome for surgery, a better outcome for surgery means a better outcome for recovery so it is a Win Win situation. You have to look after you while waiting for surgery.

Physiological

How will this present itself to you ?

What is physiologic stress? Physiological stress can be defined as any external or internal condition that challenges the homeostasis of a cell or an organism. in this case you,  It can be divided into three different aspects: environmental stress, intrinsic developmental stress, and aging.

You may find  your heart rate will increase, for a short and initial reaction, you may find swelling around the injured  area,  you may have a sharp stabbing, burning  or tingling pain, this being nerve related . Movement may become restricted , also discoloration of skin in the area e.g. . Bruising, this is the first part, then it is about the after affects, the injury may need surgery, while waiting for surgery you may need to have medication, this has to be considered, though you have to work with your body to keep healthy, you may have an injury that causes difficulty in getting around, so you have to make changes in how you do things, we also have to consider aging, some injuries can have a worse affect the older you are , the need to keep bones in good order and ladies be aware after menopause bone density , is just as important as muscles being kept supple, we all need to try to age well, injuries in your youth can come back to haunt you as you get older.

Psychological.

How will this present itself to you ?

When I first, started to write this section, I thought about how people react to an injury, at first and it is basically, The Fight Flight or Freeze reaction, the adrenalin kicks in and we go onto Auto mode,  then the realisation kicks in once we know the outcome of the injury, from the acute stage to the chronic stage it will all take a toll on you in so many ways because of the inability to do what you were able to do before , there is doubt,  there is fear, also guilt, this can all lead to depression.

By now you may be wondering where do  I go from here and the impact of extended  time  , waiting for treatment , in the form of NHS surgery, your muscle still need to work, but if you are not giving them chance, then the longer term issues can come into play.

Forced movement may rupture  muscles, thus creating further issues, during that waiting time the injury can get worse the pain can escalate the painkilling medication is no longer effective so may be increased, while waiting for surgery you still need to stay active, but mobility becomes excessively difficult, you may end up or stronger medication that comes with it’s own side effects , this is when you may feel like it is all spiralling downward and out of your control, you have to be able to function for your own mental and physical health  therefore,

Bio Nuropulse in action

Pain Free Movement is the Goal!

“I know it all sounds a bit doom and gloom, but that need not be the case, the need to keep supple to keep the  endorphins working especially the,  Beta endorphin (this is a great hormone we all love this hormone even if we don’t know it’s name if you are a runner this is the hormone that gives you that great rush, I know a lot of runners that say running becomes addictive because of that feeling they get, well this is the hormone that gives you that feeling, it is a endogenous opioid and a peptide hormone , it is produced in certain  neurons within both the Central and Peripheral Nervous System it helps in the modulation of pain perception, both in the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. When pain is perceived, within the pain receptors, ( Nociceptors.)”

The Beta Endorphin main job is to  decrease bodily stress and maintaining homeostasis resulting in pain management, it also plays a main part in the  reward effects, and behavioural stability.

Bioneuro Sigma Steve Kirby in Use

This is why I use the Bioneuro Sigma Q  in my treatment of patients  it is able to work through the Central and Peripheral Nervous System working on all three types of receptors that regulate the neurotransmission of pain signals.

These receptors are called Mu, Delta, and Kappa Opioid Receptors., these are the guys that control  the release of the Beta Endorphin allowing activation of the muscle tissue and nerves, in response to stimulation, relaxation and  reinvigoration of the muscle tissue.  all to improve healing.

With a combination of treatment  designed to delver a good clinical outcome, both pre and post surgery, the main point being with any treatment for my patients, is that  gentle persuasion of a muscle tissue after injury works a lot better than forcing it  working with the patient in their time, baby steps if need be gives more confidence than making them push themselves before they feel able, a patient is a person not a statistic, for me it is the same be it pre or post op a  patient needs to reach their goals and for that it takes time care and understanding.

Own Goals can be Painful

Own Goals can be Painful

We have all done it at some point in our lives, we have  scored an own goal.

Quite often at a time when we are wanting to be at our best,  be it in our fitness and health ,doing the garden or in our exercise regime ,  even in our business working environment, we were trying our best then an injury occurs,

We hear these statements, from our patients quite frequently .

This it was not meant to happen, it was not in the plan, certainly don’t want it, can’t afford this to happen, I should never have  risked it .

We know  it’s always inconvenient,  often painful even if it is not a broken bone,  we know it will cause us a problem.

The Questions we get asked are.

How bad is it ?

Will I be off work ?

How long will it take to recover ?

Will there be long term damage ?

Can you sort it out?

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Our answer is, “We will do our best to help you get back to being the best you can as soon as you can”

Here at Getfitstayfit Norfolk it is all about “The Goals” we want you to score the right goals and to get them in the Back of the net

Our Goal is to to deliver

This is for all our patients,  we need to get you back to fitness, we score by giving good treatment , working with our  patients in their time ,

Getting  to an injury early is essential, the need to reduce pain, to achieve pain free  movement, to restore  the bodies  natural fluidity and balance , this can only  come with good core stability, our goal is to achieve this.

Shoulder Trauma in Norwich
You have had an injury, be it shoulder , back , hip ,or knee, it is your injury.Back Pain In Human Body You did not want it,no one wants’ it to happen, you did not expect it, so the question is. What are you going to do now ?
For those injured  muscles to be functional and well orchestrated again, by the nerves that are just sending, out of tune  pain messages, to calm them down and allow the body to be  working in harmony again, To reduce the need for painkilling medication and for the brain, to work at a better level again and not be fogged by the medication used to mask the pain.

How do we achieve this ?

With the use of  Neuro muscular injury techniques and manipulation, getting to the root of the problem , using the Bioneuro and its ability of  identifying the nerves that are not firing, therefore not getting the messages through to the muscle groups, that facilitate movement, we are then in a position to restore the damage area and get people back on track to healing.
This is for all our patients, we need to get you back to fitness, we score by giving good treatment , working with our patients in their time , Getting to an injury early is essential, the need to reduce pain, to achieve pain free movement, to restore the bodies natural fluidity and balance , this can only come with good core stability, our goal is to achieve this.

Our aim to activate those nerves , invigorate the muscles, to improve healing , a combination of treatment  designed to delver a good result, so that our patients , can go on to deliver the goals they want to achieve.

Adrian had also suffered a major trauma, in which he had been being kicked in the hip by a race horse

Adrian had also suffered a major trauma

Being kicked by a horse is like being hit by a ton weight moving at about 20 miles an hour

Here at our Neuromuscular and Skeletal  Injury Clinic we treat patients  with both chronic and acute injuries, caused by either  sudden mild muscular trauma, repetitive muscular injury or in quite a few cases a long term muscular injury due to a very traumatic related incident.

I have always believed that when you treat a patient you are treating the whole  of the patient, to do that you have to ask questions and listen to the answers give them time to think about and discuss with you how they are feeling, what had happened, how they are adapting what has being going on since the incident.

You need all the information and it is amazing how much people do not tell you at first, but as time passes more is revealed to help you put things into perspective.

This is what has been happening with one of our Long term patients .

Adrian presented at our clinic in the summer of 2019.

Blinded with fear of the future due to the view and consensus, it was possible, that he was suffering from  Cerebellar ataxia (Cerebellar ataxia can occur as a result of many diseases and may present with symptoms of an inability to coordinate balance, gait, extremity and eye movement). This man used to swim for his county ,be very fit and had quality of life .

Knowing  that specialised treatment with  ( Transcranial direct current stimulation TDCS) was being trialled I felt strongly we could help with Bioneuro Sigma Q treatment .

Further investigations found Adrian had also suffered a major trauma, in which he had been being kicked in the hip by a race horse, being kicked by a horse is like being hit by a ton weight moving at about 20 miles an hour, this in anyone’s book is major impact injury, then stamping on his foot,  let’s not kid ourselves here, we are not just talking shattered bones, but nerve and muscle damage all of a serious degree in truth it could kill you.

For Adrian  it had caused dramatic physical deterioration, The impact for him  being kicked by the race horse had caused Femoral Acetabular Impingement  (FAI ).

Then to add to that, he then had to have  abdominal prostate surgical intervention, this also caused numerous issues, his core stability was by no means in anyway in a good condition, leaving him  with, very poor  coordinated motions of his hip ,lower spinal column and femur  life for this man was not great.

Bioneuro sigma Q intervention has aided the return of good Pelvifemoral rhythmic motion to aid this physical abilities in every fashion.

So what clinical outcomes have we seen with Bioneuro, Sigma Q  .

Here are a few ,

Walking ability/posture,  Has improved greatly now 95 % unaided .

Hip and knee function that had degenerated greatly, Muscle tone improved  and natural proprioception ,all three types  (  perception or awareness of the position and movement of the body)  dramatically improved .

All Physiological natural everyday bodily functions are working well with ,Medication no longer required to aid in these functions.

Adrian’s Neurologist had seen him when we first commenced  treatment, seeing him since treatment started, he  is deeply impressed , due to the fact that the physical degeneration had ceased and he was now seeing  marked improvement

We are  pleased that on each appointment, Adrian has shown a positive response and that at his next appointment,  he will be showing much further improvement and he is moving forward.

There is much more to write as we take this journey with Adrian , this is such a good news story of a life being restored and a person having quality of life in every sense again.

The bigger and more powerful overriding goal for Adrian and his partner Haley, is a (WWW. one), no not the World Wide Web .

This is closer to home for them both, a home they are  wanting to build together starting with.

A Walk (Totally unaided  down an Aisle)  , Adrian said to me when we first met this was one of his main hopes he wanted walk his future wife Haley, down the aisle at their Wedding, to a future together building their lives again, then back to  Work ,to return to his job, this can now be looked at and seriously considered.

All Physiological natural everyday bodily functions are working well with ,Medication no longer required to aid in these functions. Adrian’s Neurologist had seen him when we first commenced treatment, seeing him since treatment started, he is deeply impressed , due to the fact that the physical degeneration had ceased and he was now seeing marked improvement We are pleased that on each appointment, Adrian has shown a positive response and that at his next appointment, he will be showing much further improvement .

That’s the future clinical outcome that  I want to work towards for him, with the aid of Bioneuro Sigma Q, the same as I want for all my patients ,so they can have quality of life to the full.

Do Sports Massage Therapist, or Soft Tissue Therapist get the credit they deserve ?

Folks I have read a lot of comments in reference to Sports Massage Therapist, or Soft Tissue Therapist not being able to open just yet . In all my 30 years of being a therapist I have never known so many of my colleague’s to be so despondent and under valued and it saddens me, because I know how much work they do

Folks I have read a lot of comments in reference to Sports Massage Therapist, or Soft Tissue Therapist not being able to open just yet .

In all my 30 years of being a therapist I have never known so many of my colleague’s to be so despondent and under valued and it saddens me, because I know how much work they do.

As the re-opening is starting after Covid 19 ,a Soft Tissue Therapist  said “If we are waiting for them to say the words Sports Massage or Soft Tissue Therapist can re-open , then forget it they won’t “ .

The reason being they NEVER said that Sports Massage or Soft Tissue Therapist should close,  please bear with me on this , as I would like you to think back to 2012 and the Olympic Games in London, when a considerable number of Massage Therapist and such were helping out by looking after the athletes, at the end they were thanked for their work.

in fact I do think it was, Boris that thanked them, but what did he call them ? “It was Physio’s” he  like most event organisers and a lot of athletes,  just think of all therapist, that are looking after them as Physio’s.

They do not concern themselves with all the different organisations that are involved,  they just want someone to do the job, to help fix them when they are injured.

After all the term  Physiotherapist according to the Oxford dictionary is “A person qualified to treat disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise,  be it after a hip replacement or injury”, there is no definition for either a Soft Tissue Therapist or Sports Massage Therapist in the dictionary, so no wonder they get confused as to what we do .

It is our own bureaucracy that has created the divisions and the discrimination, we have one word that causes us problems and that word is, MASSAGE  it is not considered by some insurance companies as a treatment, even if you are dealing with rehabilitation massage after injury, they consider massage as a preventative just for relaxing, they do not consider the beneficial out comes for a client .

The word holds so many connotations, “a massage” is considered  a source of pleasure,  ” A relaxing massage” we have all heard the term, we also know that when you add the word PARLOUR,  then bells ring in any professional therapist head.

As it has very seedy connotations and a word we need to stop using to define our business’s,  as the definition in Collins Dictionary  states “A Massage Parlour is a place where people go and pay for a massage, some places that are called Massage Parlours, are in fact places where people pay to have sex.

As Boris is the type of person that would and does very often refer to the Dictionary Meaning, is it possible that therapist are asking the wrong question ? First should we ask “What sort of establishment  is Boris referring to when he  states Massage Parlours, are to remain closed, does he know the difference between Physiotherapists and Soft Tissue Therapist.?

We may find that neither he, or his other party ministers  understand the difference, and that we have been categorising ourselves unnecessarily, because of a word.

Please do not misunderstand me, I have agreed and adhered to the rules,  but I do feel that this is now a matter of confusion, because of how we define our businesses.

I am not a Massage Therapist, I use massage as part of the treatment process for my patients,  I am a Neuromuscular Injury Therapist and I have worked hard to achieve this.

I work with and Consultants, GPs Neurologist, Orthopaedic Consultants, I have had the privilege of being trained by an incredible Anatomist , I am able to discuss and receive advice in what I am achieving for my patients, with some very well respected consultants ,  I deal with injuries and long term rehabilitation, I have worked with  people across the social spectrum from  elite athletes to elderly folk, that have had hip or knee surgery and find they struggled with the exercises given to them by the physiotherapist and they need a more hands on approach and support, People Do Not come to me, for  a Relaxing Massage or a Happy Ending, I do not run that kind of establishment, I treat patients that need my help with trauma related pathologies and injury prevention.

Ivan, Chronic injuries can still be helped just may take a little longer

Ivan Chronic injuries can still be helped just may take a little longer

Over the past few months the vital need to show good clinical outcomes has become more important than ever to lift people up .

“We first met Ivan at the end of 2014 . He presented with a number of chronic trauma pathologies which had occurred in 2003″

He lives quite a distance away, he had continued to work and sail with his injuries, unable to come for regular treatment having quite a few other commitments, but when he did manage to get a clear week, so he could come  for treatment, we made the most of it and it truly has been paying off, yes it has been a slow and steady journey.

He presented initially with chronic hip ,lower back pathologies, his foot was rotated out of line and his right leg artificially shortened  so it was not much more than a crutch,  a number of muscles had atrophied greatly (wasted nearly away ) in his Gluteal and Lateral Rotator’s muscles his Gluteus Maximus had  atrophied so much, to the point that his hip bone was very evident and in truth he had no buttock on his right hand side, Deeper lateral Rotators had practically seized and were atrophied,  Spinal Rotator muscles and their ability to function correctly were very inhibited,   with no functional lateral Rotator,  his ability to walk (gait) was excessively limited .

His upper torso had pulled over to the right hand side to about 75 degrees,  quality of life was  very limited .

This man loved and still loves sailing and yacht racing on an international level,  to which he has a great deal of knowledge and also about  boat building his other passion.

Ivan had received numerous other interventions prior to attending our clinic with no positive  constructiveness in their outcomes

Working very hard on these muscle and nerve  pathologies, with the use of a Neuromuscular Activation system, sending frequency deep into  the body to activate nerve messengers, Motor Neurons  and Neuropeptides, has aided greatly to enhance my ability to target strategic nerves to help restore semi morbid fascia, therefore helping  to achieve a very positive clinical outcome,  allowing  activation of  the deep nerve pathways, therefore  allowing much greater muscle function ability, this is not something that could be achieved  with manual therapy  alone.

Ivan had a solid determination  to achieve, so that when we were not able to have treatment sessions, he kept up with the exercise plan, that between us we had decided was the best way for him to go.

Along with Ivan’s Physiological factors that have improved greatly and he is able to achieve a great deal more and will continue to do so. Psychologically, Ivan feels more confident and assured in his ability to move forward  with his life.

Please see the video , yes we know  Ivan is still using sticks, but in most circumstances he is down to one stick.

He can stand up  straight without dragging his right leg behind him , his posture has improved greatly, we have activated very deep muscle groups in his body, to achieve this clinical outcome so  far.

“We know there is more work to be done and will continue to work hard to improved the clinical outcome.”

Knee and Hips we all have them, but the unfortunate thing is we use them and abuse them.

Steve and Jacqui Kirby

Knee and Hips we all have them, but the unfortunate thing is we use them and abuse them , we take them for granted, we work them, sometimes when we should be resting them .

Our joints work hard for us and when they fail us we need to deal with reasons for this, sometimes our joints have got to the point that we need surgery in the form of a Hip or knee replacement, the waiting times for such surgery is long and it is getting longer.

During that waiting time the injury can get worse the pain can escalate the painkilling medication is no longer

effective , while waiting for surgery you still need to stay active , but mobility becomes excessively difficult, you may end up or stronger medication that comes with it’s own side effects .

When we are less mobile and in pain it affects our well being overall, our mental health, we can get depressed, one of the main things is the lack of muscle use, when we are less mobile and use our muscles less they tighten or shorten we feel stiff this makes us fell less like moving , but we need to keep those muscles active, we need the blood and oxygen to  move through our muscles, all in all we make it more difficult for ourselves if we don’t.

Supple Muscles make life a whole lot better, while you are Pre-Op, during Surgery and Post Op.

Before I met my wife Jacqui, she had been involved in a very bad car crash, one of her injuries resulted in her needing a Hip replacement, on her Right hand side, one of the other injuries on her Left hand side was her Patella, it was dislocated and had to be put back into position she also had  shoulder, wrist and foot injuries.

I treated Jacqui after her Hip surgery getting her back walking again, but a couple of years later her knee, that had never been fully right after her accident, started to give her real problems, we found out she had a Patella Fracture  she needed a knee replacement, when you have a knee replacement it is never the same, your knee does a lot of work and a replacement knee can not move in the same natural flexible way a your own knee can, so it was a daunting and worrying time for Jacqui.

For me it was time to find out more and more, what would be the best treatment for her to aid with recovery, I hit the books big time talked to a knee surgeon,  I was determined to make sure she had a great recovery , during that time I found out so much more about knee injury,  I was determined to  use it to my advantage , I have since put all that information and learning into the treatment of my clients, to specialise in Hip and Knee Pre-op and Post-op recovery and rehabilitation, for them to have as quicker recovery with the need for less medication and while they are waiting for surgery to help make their time more bearable keeping them flexible and more prepared for surgery.

We used the Bioneuro along with massage and Neuro manipulation techniques to keep Jacqui’s muscles supple during that time she did not need painkilling medication, and she was mobile, when it got closer to the surgery unfortunately there had been a delay of 2 months for  surgery, things did get a little more difficult with mobility so we did use the Bioneuro a little more , it did the job even the surgeon was pleased at how good a condition her muscles were in as it made his job easier and the recovery time would be less.

Bioneuro Sigma Steve Kirby in Use

Using the Bioneuro after surgery and again gentle massage helped with a speedy recovery , she did well getting a good bend on her knee and walking up and down stairs, one of the best things was that during that recovery time Jacqui did not need lots of medication she had good blood flow and good muscle movement, healing was far quicker and she got back to doing what she loved doing taking our dog for a walk and she still does.

We can help with pre-op while you are waiting for that hip or knee surgery to keep those muscles supple and help with mobility meaning less medication and more movement, or Post op as sometimes after surgery people find it difficult to get going again and need that bit of hands on treatment to get them on a good recovery path.

When you are given the Diagnosis of Diabetes type 2. it has not just happened on that day, otherwise they would not be diagnosing it.

Diagnosis of Diabetes type 2

When you are given the Diagnosis of Diabetes type 2. it has not just happened on that day, otherwise they would not be diagnosing it.

The damage is already taking place, it is not the 1st day of the disease, it is the “wake up call that something is very wrong”  it is not the Starting point, what it needs to be “is the point where intervention will stop or reduce the acceleration”.

Where you take control of it and your body, so that Diabetes does not take control of you .

You have to take charge, you have to look at your diet, health and your exercise plan, I am not saying that you have suddenly start running, going to the gym and take on the world.

Talk to and take the advice of the Diabetic Nurse have a look at   Diabetes Uk for advice in regards to your diet  lots of information, charts and answers yes there is a lot to take in, so take your time, but if you set a Goal to get ahead of this, then you will.

“In other words no matter what advice you are given. in the end it is going to be up to you so try to do the right thing for you”

Exercise is good but the right type , you need to look at the cardiovascular, start easy go swimming, walking you need to get the muscles relaxed not tighten them up , there are reasons for this.

The things that you need to be aware of you have to reduce your sugar intake, smoking and excessive alcohol use can contribute to Diabetic Neuropathy, also pure fruit juice in fact forget the sugary drinks and high in sugar fruits, leaf vegetables are your friend, but read up on things. You do need to make sure you are looking at both your nutrition and movement.

Exercise is good but the right type , you need to look at the cardiovascular, start easy go swimming, walking you need to get the muscles relaxed not tighten them up , there are reasons for this.

Tightened or shortened muscles, do not have  good blood flow and nerve supply and Good Blood Flow and Nerve supply is essential if you have Diabetes.

In that exercise plan please consider Massage, for many reasons apart from helping with blood flow and lymphatic system’s it will also help with lifting mood and depression, so it aids both your Psychological and the Physiological systems. It will help keep the muscles supple, the blood flow will increase, more important you will get blood flow to your muscles and your nerve supply will increase  one won’t work with out the other to create movement , the muscles facilitate the movement the nerves orchestrate  it.

You have to look after your extremities, I.E your hands and feet, this is not something to  take with a pinch of salt it is one of the more worrying things about Diabetes, the problem is Many people with diabetes have Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).

PAD’s will reduce Blood flow to the feet, the other part of the problem is that  many people with diabetes also have nerve disease, this then  reduces sensation.

Some facts that you should consider

Our Blood vessels are vital for the body and play a key role in diabetes helping to transport glucose and insulin, But they can become  damaged by the effects of high blood glucose levels , so there is going to be a knock on effect , it can cause damage to organs, such as the heart and eyes, if significant blood vessel damage is sustained, the reason being Damaged blood vessels can’t do their job, they are meant  too such as  bringing oxygen and nutrients to the nerves,  if they are damaged , eventually it will lead to nerve damage.

Diabetic neuropathy, you will more than likely hear it called ” Diabetic Nerve Pain”, this is diabetes related nerve damage. It will develop over time; unfortunately  the longer you have diabetes, the more at risk you are for diabetic neuropathy to become a reality, so the sooner you start to look after you the better things will be.

I always believe strongly  as a Therapist everyday is a learning opportunity . Especially with  pathologies  such as diabetes.

Every one is made the same, but in some way we are all different . I have been using cutting edge technology in the form of The Bioneuro System Sigma Q, along with massage and manipulations to  aid my  clients, are noticing great results.

it was great to receive this from one of my patients Darren in feed back, it is great to see his improvement at each session.

Dear Steve

In September of 2018 I underwent a second operation to remove a large kidney stone – after the operation I was suffering from a pain in the right hip and the front of the right thigh was painful to the touch – after some visits to the doctors, then a physio I was referred to neurology – a wait of some 16 weeks

At this time I could not walk (even on a smooth flat surface) without a stick – and anything other than a perfectly flat surface would lead to the leg collapsing and I ended up lying on the floor –  leading to several embarrassing moment at potential customers properties and a more serious incident where I fell down a flight of 12 concrete steps

I could not negotiate slopes – uphill was painful to the front of the leg and downhill resulted in loss of feeling

I couldn’t carry anything heavier than 1 kg as I would lose balance

I always felt fatigued – dropping off to sleep in the afternoon and retiring to bed as early as 8 pm in the evening

I could not lift the right leg into the air if lying on my back – climbing and depending stairs was extremely difficult – getting in/out of cars was hard and in/out of vans impossible

After finally seeing a consultant and undertaking a nerve test I was informed that basically I was to live with this condition as its diabetes related

Moving forward and on recommendation I have now had 4 treatments with Steve  on his Bioneuro Sigma Q system and the  improvements are remarkable:

I walk unaided on the majority of surfaces – with or without shopping

I can step-up and down kerbs without fear

I can raise my leg from the lying down position

I have reduced the amount of painkillers to just 1 every other day (from 2 per day)

I am less fatigued

I can descend stairs almost normally

I can with effort, climb stairs normally

I can rise from the sitting position without help and cross my legs

I have now started to take the children 10 pin bowling – although not as fluid in delivery as I want to be I can deliver a 12 pound ball down the lane pain free

7 Marathons in 7 Days

This early May bank holiday was the start of an incredible week for me, I had the pleasure to be part of a team that helped two fantastic guys, that were doing,

7 in 7, Going Beyond, I mean 7 Marathons in 7 Days, these two men, I have come to admire and  truly proud to have been of help to them.

First what they were doing , this was a major challenge, some would say impossible, but they were intent on doing it so they needed to have support, their challenge was to run 7 marathons in 7 days staring on the Bank holiday Monday

The reason to raise funds, for a Community project here in Norwich, you may ask why  ? If you had met these two guys you would understand it just had to be done.

The  original building for Soul church was at Heartsease Lane it had been burnt down 13 years ago,  the intention is to rebuild and build it better, to offer more for the community of Norwich, to help with our homeless and the people that need us most in the community, it is not just about a building.

As a member of Soul Church Norwich, a very proactive church and with our pastor Jon Norman also a  Chaplin for Norwich City  being a very much a hands on get the job done type of guy,  when he decided that he was going to do this, his enthusiasm alone made you want to be on board with it, so Jon then got together with his fellow Chaplin for Norwich City, Lewis Blois to undertake the challenge.

We had some great people involved all brought together and under the watchful eye of Nathan French, he took on the role of coordinator arranging the route to the venues the guys were going to visit like Carrow Road on the 6th day of the challenge also the day that Norwich City, went up to Premier League , also on board, Neil Featherby  of Sports Link, Neil is know for the challenges he takes on and running is his passion, so who better to set out the target’s and regime for the guys, also the team of support staff for the guys.

The guys had to stay focused and keep ahead the goal in their mind, they had to stay positive and that alone is a challenge as any runner could tell you. My job was to keep their muscles working to the best of their ability allowing them to push through each day knowing it would be a little bit harder every day for them keeping the muscles supple, we could not afford any aches pains or niggles.

My job was to keep their muscles working to the best of their ability allowing them to push through each day knowing it would be a little bit harder every day for them  keeping the muscles supple, we could not afford any aches pains or niggles.

Using Neuromuscular Techniques , Massage and when needed the input of The Bioneuro System,  the guys had been making sure they were working to a build up regime warming up before they did any runs, keeping hydrated.

Muscles will get damaged if allowed to shorten, also they risked the high possibility of Lactic acidosis build up, this is when  your body doesn’t have enough available oxygen to break down glucose in the blood,  although Lactic acid does not cause soreness in muscles and massage does not remove lactic acid, what massage does do is to allow better blood flow that will help the muscles to be  oxygenated by blood flow.

Lactic acidosi  is the condition that was so important for us to avoid , this is a condition that is caused by a build up of Lactate in the body due to the amount of exercise the guys were going to be doing the risk of build up of L-Lactate in the bloodstream was extremely high  along with the formation of an  excessively low pH in the bloodstream.

Creating  a form of metabolic acidosis,  this is when the excessive acid accumulates go on to create a problem with the body’s oxidative metabolism ,causing a burning feeling in the muscle groups they were using the most, also nausea and weakness.

Massage and hydration  allowed  their bodies to replenish their  fluids rid them of lactic acid

allow nutrients to create the  energy  they  needed, therefore , relieving  sore muscles. preventing muscle cramps and keeping  their  bodies performing at optimal levels, massage  also helped  prevent the onset of DOM’s keeping the muscles flexible .

The guys handled the whole 7 in 7 really well, no major issues just very tired by the end of it all, If you would like to know more about how they did and what they raised please have a look at some of the highlights

Is There Help For Fibromyalgia a disorder characterised by widespread Musculoskeletal pain

Problems with the neck that transferred to the trapezium down through the shoulder to the arms. As I always say all muscles pull and if you have a tight muscle in the upper part of the body it will affect other areas, this was the case for Peter, the same affect as leaning over the computer at work all day, here is his testimony after being treated by Steve.

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterised by widespread Musculoskeletal pain.

It’s not clear why some people develop Fibromyalgia. The exact cause is unknown, but it’s likely that a number of factors are involved, it is often accompanied by fatigue, sleep issues,( as sleep is often disrupted by pain,) many patients with Fibromyalgia also have other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome and sleep apnoea.

Many people who have Fibromyalgia, also suffer from tension headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression. Also they may have memory and cognitive difficulties a symptom that impairs the ability to focus, to pay attention and concentrate on mental tasks this  symptom is commonly referred to as “fibro fog”  the list goes on, also affecting a persons mood, (No wonder with all that is going on )

All in all people with Fibromyalgia have a really rough time of it, the exact cause of Fibromyalgia is still  unknown, but it’s thought to be related to abnormal levels of certain chemicals in the brain and changes in the way the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) processes pain messages to the neurotransmitters that are carried around the body.

Fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes the pain signals. and in many ways Fibromyalgia appears as a symptom of something else .

Fibromyalgia  as I have already said is difficult to diagnose as symptoms sometimes begin, after a physical trauma, surgery, infection  or significant psychological stress so getting to the Root Cause is not always going to be possible, women are also  more likely to develop Fibromyalgia than men

While we know that  there is as yet no cure that has been found, for Fibromyalgia, there are a variety of medications, that can help control symptoms, along with  Exercise, Relaxation and Stress-Reduction measures.

Having worked with a few patients that have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, I will be the fist to say it is not something that can be dealt with quickly, it is all about baby steps.

Working with your patient taking time and tracking back all the time.

By Repairing the injured muscle, working into the superficial and deep Fascia , we can move on to Recovery, by this I mean getting the muscles working for themselves again gently coxing them back in to functional ability, getting the blood flowing back into them and releasing the tension in the muscles .getting all the body systems to work in a cohesive order .

So when I received this testimonial from one of my patients I was so proud of how far we had come together and for her to reach her goal

This is Kim’s Testimonial

I am a single 56 year old female who, until 9 years ago was very fit and active.  I went to see my GP with a lot of pain in my left shoulder, which I thought was a pulled muscle. Within a couple of weeks the pain spread down into the whole left side of my body. My GP, finally diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia and I was given pain killers.

After that, I feel that everything was a constant battle and felt very let down by the health system. I don’t want to bore you with details but I am sure anyone suffering from Fibromyalgia will understand.  I have had to resort paying for private treatments (acupuncture and visits to Osteopath, supplements, etc.), which when you have not been able to work due to chronic pain and fatigue, etc. etc., is an extra stress financially and emotionally.

After a terrible year, last year, physically and emotionally I was so unwell and had no choice but to stop work. My health had deteriorated and I became depressed. I had to do something, but what?! I have tried so many things from reading websites, blogs, etc., nothing was really helping.

Then I read about a place in Norwich (Getfitstayfit Norfolk) ran by Steve and his wife Jacqui and I was not only impressed by his reviews, but by a treatment he offered using The Bioneuro Therapy System Sigma Q (ΣQ®)”

I read about how this works and it seemed too good to be true, but was willing to give it a try, as I had never read about this before, thought it’s new, they’ve finally found the cure for the pain!!

My first visit was a consultation and some time at the end using the BNTS for pain in my foot, ankle and calf. Just from that, the pain had gone and my ankle and calf had lost the stiffness you get with Fibromyalgia.

After two further  visits,  and I can honestly say the pain and stiffness had decreased by 70%. Remember, I had pain on L/H/S right from my head all the way  down to my feet, back and front of body for 9 whole years!

I’ve already cut my Morphine dose by a third (needs to be done gradually supervised by GP!) I have had the odd bit of pain but it subsides quicker and it’s not all over body now. I know that if, say I have  a fall or overdone things, I can call Steve and rectify instead of going back to how I was.

Needless to say, I can’t thank Steve enough, I had become desperate and very let down and felt like giving up, I was exhausted. I owed it to myself and Son to get better. I know I won’t be as fit and active as I was 9 yrs.’ ago (I’m 9 yrs.’ older!) But it’s given me the hope to get a better quality of life and eventually a job to pay my bills.

Fibromyalgia is hard to understand unless you’ve had it, you can feel extremely lonely and misunderstood.

The most important thing for me is that Steve genuinely is interested and cares.

Chronic pain in my back till I went to Getfitstayfit Norfolk

Chronic pain in my back

Our Clients are very important to us, seeing them recovering from injury, watching them improve with Rehabilitation Massage, Neuromuscular Techniques and improving in a shorter period of time with the use of The Bioneuro, reducing the need for pharmacological input, in other words seeing them Get Better.

Its great to achieve this and it is our goal with all our clients, I know it does not work out for a few people, but not many and I know we do have some great results, so when we received this email from Christine, a lovely lady and pleased to be have as one of our clients, she was not in a great way when she first came to us, we asked her if we could share the email.

Previous shoulder issues treated only with rest and medication will not properly rehabilitate and are prone to re-injury until properly conditioned by corrective exercise, therapy treatment, Sports Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy and manipulation . Exercises alone will not gain full pain free restoration and quality of life.

Because this is what we are all about to try to do the best we can for our clients so they can be the best they can, her words say it all

Dear Steve

Just to let you know how everyone is amazed at the difference in me since I began my treatment with you about six weeks ago.

I have suffered with chronic pain for 39 years following a hysterectomy,  and having opiates of varying kinds for all this time with injections into the spine and nerves being burnt out, all under the Pain Clinic.

Five years ago after having lots of treatment by a Rheumatologist for treatments in my shoulders, hands etc, he finally sent me to a spinal surgeon for the continuing chronic pain in my back and legs and a Trendelburg gait which made we walk like an old woman. An MRI shew  severe spinal stenosis and an operation was performed to remove excess bone down my spine.

This made no difference so a lumbar decompression with instrumentation was performed to stabilise my spine. unfortunately this was unsuccessful in alleviating my pain and life just continued to deteriorate with myself being unable to walk any distance  and feeling life was virtually finished for me – I was desperate, at times wishing I did not have to wake up.

A friend told me about you and I was reluctant to consider seeing you as I had seen physios, chiropractors and acupuncturists and masseurs ,  all to no avail.

Well, I am this week walking my dog, going to the city and feeling so much better. I am now on half dose of my Tramadol, decreasing to 25.% next week. I cannot wait to see the difference with more treatments. I am so thankful to God for using you to help me start living again.

I know that I cannot be cured and will always have an element of pain,  but to know that I can begin now to see some light at the end of the long dark tunnel I have been in, fills me with hope for the future. It is indeed wonderful not to be in excruciating pain and muscle spasms.

Once again Steve, a big thank you for the wonderful care you have shown  to me.

God Bless

Christine

Sometimes in Business you have to roll with the punches

Sometimes in Business you have to roll with the punches

Sometimes in Business you have to roll with the punches, well here at Getfitstayfit Norfolk we are doing a little more than that.

Some things are just meant to happen, we started looking after Torban, after meeting him and his family  at Soul Church in Norwich,  our aim is to make sure, we keep on top of any injury he may sustain, using Massage Neuromuscular techniques and of course the Bioneuro, at the same time keeping him in the best of shape for his matches.

.

Just recently on the 28th October 2021 Torban had a match at Wisbech for a Charity event to raise awareness for Mental Health with the main guest being Frank Bruno, Torban met Frank when Torban was 15 years of age and has never forgot that meeting, then to be meeting Frank again at a match that Torban himself was to be fighting in

We were proud to have been one of his sponsors, this is a young man with a lot of potential, drive, determination and focus on his goal.

Could Massage Boost Your Immune System? “Of Course It Can”

Could Massage Boost Your Immune System

While watching the TV program Trust Me I’m A Doctor” my ears pricked up and really wanted to know about one of the sections in the program.

Could massage boost your immune system?

He went on to say “Massage is one of the oldest therapies in existence.

Well we already knew that one , but guess what,  they should have replaced the words.

“Could Massage with the words Massage does “

Bio Nuropulse in action

It seems that General Medicine has taken it’s time to catch up with us Massage Therapist.

When you have a patient that comes to you after an injury and you work on them using massage, you notice the difference, you are spending time with them, you notice them healing.

We know that restoring them back to fitness is the aim.

We know Massage releases the “feel good factor” and there is a reason for that  it is not all about just relaxing, massage helps release Endorphins and  Dopamine, it is the physical input that the therapist applies to the patient  and how it is applied that makes the difference.

In the program they next , teamed up with Professor Fulvio D’Acquisto, an immunologist from the University of Roehampton and the Bodyology Massage School, to show a basic trial

Professor Fulvio had come across research which had found that massage boosted the number of white blood cells, the main interest in this case  being in the  “cells,  a certain  type of white blood cell” and the reaction and results to massage,  for  patients suffering from HIV, this a disease that causes a reduction in the white blood cells known as T Lymphocytes.(I have added the link to the HIV Study.) there is so much to look at and take in that the links are worth a read to put things in perspective.

Professor Fulvio had come across research which had found that massage boosted the number of white blood cells, the main interest in this case being in the “T cells, a certain type of white blood cell” and the reaction and results to massage, for patients suffering from HIV, this a disease that causes a reduction in the white blood cells known as T Lymphocytes.(I have added the link to the HIV Study.) there is so much to look at and take in that the links are worth a read to put things in perspective.

There were  two different types of T Cells, helper cells (CD4 T Cells and Cytotoxic or CD8 killer cells, that they were mainly of interested  in the study.

T cells are matured in the Thymus,(Hence the name T Cells) this is an organ situated under the breastbone, that does most of it’s work when we are children, before puberty it  then turns into fatty tissue, but  T cells are originally produced in the bone marrow, they later move to the Thymus, then when they have matured and the Thymus changes, they are on the move again, they then migrate to the lymph nodes (these are groups of immune system cells) throughout the body, where they work to aid the immune system in fighting disease, clever hardworking little guys these T Cells.

There are also Effector cells and Memory T cells these  may be either CD4+ or CD8 but work differently ( I have also added a link on T Cells to give a bit more information)

Taking blood samples from  Volunteers, before and after massage, so they could do a  cell count this is a blood test that measures the number of T cells in your bodyA T cell is a type of white blood cell they  then  analysed the blood test, for the number of T Lymphocytes present, this  became the  baseline reading, they  then checked them again,  comparing  the baseline results, to the results after an hour’s massage.

This  showed a 70 per cent boost in white blood cells after massage.

We all love to have good results

This was also a higher reading than they had from the volunteers simply relaxing, the other factor evident, was that in the group that had the massage, their T Cells remained higher after the test.

As T-lymphocytes  perform a wide array of functions in the body involved with growth and repair, both the Killer and Helper  Cells, when   “Thymosin: The Hormone of the Thymus is released,”  this will  help the killer Cells to destroy any bugs in the system, while the helper cells will then go on to then build up the immune system.

This has been of great interest to both myself when using the Bioneuro because of it’s ability to be used during massage and how it effectively  preforms  in boosting recovery, along with its ability to enhance Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy techniques used when treating a patient and the team at Biosysco in further developments of The Bioneuro.
