A Two Way Gift

Steve with John Sharkey

I have spoken in the past and more so just recently, in regard  to one of my patients Ivan his injury , how he has been improving and the work we have been doing to enable this .

I will say it has at times been hard work for both of us, but we have had one Goal to get Ivan walking again.

I have used what resources,  I have had at my disposal along with a Neuromuscular Activation system, I have been able to use Neuromuscular Techniques, that I had been taught while on a Neuromuscular Course with The Great John Sharkey, at the  National Training Center in Dublin

“A course I would recommend all Therapist to take.”

You can  by adapting those Neuromuscular Techniques to use them, to suit how you are  working , all us therapist do this, once you have the right standard in place you can adapt, while keeping that integral technical procedure  in place.

Things have come to fruition, This is a slightly early Christmas Present for the Both of us , but one we are so glad to receive so folks have a look at the video that we have received.

“This is Ivan’s First Time Walking Without Sticks in nearly 20 years”

.

Ivan’s email to us

Having had a traumatic injury, I had evolved a technique of getting around, to which I used my Right leg as a crutch. In response to this my muscles became stiffer, and stiffer, I didn’t feel that conventional medicine was resolving my situation, I stated looking for an alternative  being under a lot of stress due to my injury, I visited  Chiropractors and other soft tissue technicians in the  hope of  providing  some relief , but  they couldn’t resolve the problem that my right foot was 2 inches off the ground and very reluctant to follow through in front of my left.

They had however,  identified deep lateral hip rotator muscles as the problem, as they had totally atrophied

Finally a friend suggested I contact  Steve Kirby of Getfitstayfit Norfolk,  when Steve first examined me I felt he had an enormous understanding in this field, after my first visit I felt a release from what had  seemed to be pulling me downward.

Subsequent  visits enabled me  to put my right foot on the ground, using the Bioneuro a powerful implement when used by an operator, that has studied  neuromuscular injury  conditions and techniques , human movement and  physiology.

Due to family situations and distant, having regular treatment was difficult so a great deal of time  was wasted,

I  was determined to  keep working with  Steve  however  and not go backwards.

Recently  I have been able to have more regular treatment,  and  with Steve’s  training and  understanding of human  anatomy, mobility, neuromuscular techniques, combined with the added use of the  Bioneuro, it has made a great deal of  difference to me in  my life,  I can see vast improvement,  it has given me my life back, more independence, less pain, more mobility and  freedom.

At last I am beginning to walk in the conventional way again, it will take time but steps in the right direction.

His first words to me were” Can we do this ? I work off shore and want to get back”

work off shore

I don’t  think I will ever regret what I do for a living, I love my job seeing people, Getting Back to Fitness And Being The Best They Can

Then you see some people that are just incredible, their determination, drive and need to Get Back to how they were is  overpowering.

Charlie is one such person he came to me Mid March after receiving a phone call from his brother, explaining the situation.

Charlie had a very bad accident the previous December, seeing the X-rays of his injury I thought how much work his surgeon, had done to get this far And the effort,. Charlie had put in to even be able to stand let alone shuffle.

I went on to treat Charlie with the Bioneuro and massage, getting him prepared for his back to work interview with his employers, whom did not expect him back possibly till December 2019, only then the possibility of light duties certainty not back to off shore work .

Well just recently Charlie had an interview with his employers, we still have some work to do but the progress has been amazing and with no need for painkilling medication.

“The Multifidus is a very deep muscle in the human body and an excessively hard muscle to work on manually, but with treating Trevor with The Bioneuro Sigma Q, a piece of equipment that uses electrical frequency and can reach into deep muscles without being invasive, at the same time aiding neurotransmitters and blood supply to the area.”

Charlie sent me an email, with outcome.

Hi Steve

While working on a ship early December 2017 in the North Sea in extremely rough weather, I was thrown across the deck.

I had to be taken into hospital with a bad back injury, turns out  I had crushed vertebrae, I had to have spinal compression surgery (my nerves were trapped between the discs ) I was told there was every possibility, I may not walk again.

After the surgery I had very limited movement in my Legs, feet and toes,  I was put onto a course of physiotherapy, it was working, but very slowly but it got me up onto a frame walking, but it was hard and  really slow, in January I was still in a wheel chair.

February came and I had progressed to a walking frame by mid March I had advanced to two sticks, but with the shuffle and hard to put one foot in front of the other and still wobbly.

While talking to my brother he told me about, him having treatment with Getfitstayfit Norfolk and a thing called Bioneuro therapy, which I had never heard of.

I spoke to my physiotherapist and she had not heard of it,  I then spoke to my consultant,  at the Norfolk and Norwich hospital and he had not heard about it either.

My brother convinced me to make an appointment  to meet Steve and have a consultation with him, to see if this Bioneuro therapy would work.

I first arrived on the 21st March still on two sticks, by mid April I was on one stick

Here we are  two months down the road I am not using the sticks, I am going back to work on light duties towards Mid June .

Then hopefully within a short period  I will be back to work full time and back off shore, this treatment has really made a difference, the possibilities for anyone who’s had spinal compression surgery or suffered with similar problem as myself.

I can’t thank Steve and his Bioneuro and massage treatment, enough for what he’s done for me.

Many Thanks

Charlie.

Low Back Pain and what it means to you

Chronic pain in my back

A series of papers, due to a long term trial and study have been published in the Lancet.

They make interesting and worrying reading, asking the worldwide medical profession to stop offering ineffective and potentially harmful treatments and NICE is agreeing with them

Such as Strong drugs, injections and surgery they are generally overkill, they say, with limited evidence that they help.

People may have seen the article on the BBC  “Many back pain patients are ‘getting wrong care”  if you want to have a look

The truth of the matter is, in a lot of cases they are getting the wrong care.

What we need to look at is.

Most back pain is best managed by keeping active Remember that good exercise and activity, choose the right sort of activity for you and build on it, this can reduce and prevent back pain. In most cases people have strained muscles in the back, that in itself is painful, the lower back muscles, consisting of your Extensor, Flexor and your Oblique muscles , Low back pain can feel very debilitating, when you feel in pain, you do not want to keep active and do exercise, but you need to Avoid bed rest and get moving but keep it gentle, at the same time please avoid aggravating activities, no digging the garden you need to use the principles of kinetic movement when bending or lifting, in a way that is comfortable for you, using the hips and knees. People talk about “Slipped Discs” this terminology is BAD, your discs Do not slip, they can however Herniate and there is treatment that can help with that. The thoracic spine is the longest region of the spine, it is also the most comple

“Painkillers mask pain they do not heal the damaged area, also Painkillers WILL NOT speed up your recovery

In most cases they don’t help as we think they should, but because the Doctors give them to you and the advertisers say they do,  then we believe that it is the right thing to do, when your in pain with your back you may not want to hear that, Your back is stronger than you may imagine , your spine is very strong and it is not easily damaged.

The thoracic spine is the longest region of the spine, it is also the most complex.

It connects your cervical spine above to the lumbar spine below, the thoracic spine runs from the base of your neck down to your abdomen and It is the only spinal region that is attached to your rib cage. The type of pain in this region, is upper back pain, it is most commonly caused by muscle irritation or tension, a lot of you may have heard the term myofascial pain, in most cases this is caused mainly by poor posture, often bad workplace seating affecting , forward head posture, or any type of irritation of the large back and shoulder muscles, again muscle strain or spasms are an issue.

Then we have to consider Joint dysfunction. In the  Thoracic spinal joints, this can become very painful in various ways, from cartilage tears and disc degeneration , developing in the facet joints where adjacent thoracic vertebrae articulate with each other.

It is also possible for a rib to become misaligned or displaced from the vertebrae, this is a case of a tissues muscular injury becoming a structural injury, or even  facet joint degeneration (osteoarthritis) and degenerative disc disease can happen at the same time, for these sorts of issues you would need to talk to your Doctor who would more than likely need further confirmation with a scan.

It is that step between being in pain and feeling terrible, to feeling that you can cope, then going on to feeling better.

This is the area that we here at Getfitstayfit Norfolk aim to address , getting from that point of being in so much pain, that you do not want to do anything and feeling that you need to take pain killers, only to find either none or minimal sort term relief,  so you take more pain killers and do less.

The cycle starts and that is the cycle we need to break or even prevent. You need to be able to get good quality sleep, if you can, because it will help you feel better overall one of the main things most of our patient’s tell us is that they have not been able to sleep, one thing they also tell us after treatment is that they have slept, this means a lot as it is the first stage of recovery.

We know that Massage  can help with low back pain, along with spinal manipulation , here at Getfitstayfit Norfolk we also use the Bioneuro, unlike a  Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Simulation (TENS) that is digital. the Bioneuro is Analogue and  works with the bodies natural ability to heal.  it is none invasive, but can get into those muscles quicker and deeper to aid in recovery .

You also need to look at the root cause of the injury.

Accidents, Injury and Physical Trauma how Getfitstayfit Norfolk can help with recovery in Norwich

Any of these things can be the cause , there are also other factors that we can look at, like a herniated disc or in some cases disc degeneration, we can work with your Doctor on a plan to help with these issues.

What ever the reason, getting you to pain free movement, is the first step and in some cases it is all about baby steps, we work with you at your pace.

Helping Keith getting up that grading ladder and another step, closer to the Olympics

Keith  with “Quicks” MD, Les MacPherson, at the “Crookhorn” shoot, hosted by Portsmouth’s “Forest of Bere Bowman”.

Seeing him win yet another important  competition is a great reward for all the work we have done with him

Keith is a Dedicated  Competition  Archer,  we are proud of him and to be looking  after him  here at Getfitstayfit Norfolk

Keith is currently rated 17th in the UK in Archery

The whole of Keith’s  body requires weekly physical maintenance, he pushes it pretty hard.

Keith is currently rated 17th in the UK in Archery, he has to be on top form.

He needs to be able to run 10k clime hills and have perfect balance  so he can always hit that target.

We have to place a great deal of  emphasis on his Rhomboids ,Latissimus Dorsi, the whole of neck and shoulder region,  as this is the  area that has to  hold the  great degree of tension, that is needed to be finely  tuned in order to produce a positive physical ,physiological and psychological performance  in any competition on route to the next Olympics

This is further strong evidence that working with Bioneuro Sigma Q sending  electrical frequency deep into  Keith’s muscular skeletal system is enabling this man to execute his technique well .

What Did I Do This Summer ? The BioTensegrity Dissection Course 2017 of Course.!

The BioTensegrity Dissection Course 2017 of Course

Summer is officially over, but for me Late June and  July were  interesting month’s.

” I managed to do something I  really wanted to do.”

Anyone who has been treated by me, will know for me it is all about the injury, that does not mean I do not respect and understand my patients,  but what I see is the damage done and how soon it can be restored and the best way to proceed.

One of the best ways for that, is getting in there and seeing what is going on and how it is all put together , how it is all connected, but that is not likely to happen and I don’t have X Ray eyes to see what is happening.

Since Jacqui had damage to her knee and had to have a knee replacement, back in 2010, I have had a great deal of interest in knee pathologies and how to help with knee pain

Then an opportunity to go to the University of Dundee at their Department of Anatomy to find out a whole lot more, on a Body Dissection Course, the main focus of the course being on being BioTensegrity,  Genetics,Kinetics and Synergetics , with one of the best Human Anatomist, John Sharkey of the NTC in Dublin was to good an opportunity to miss.

Not only did we have John Sharkey, but with guest Lectures like Dr Jean-Claude Guimberteau, Jaap van der WalJoanne Avison and Graham Scarr.

I was in my element. needless to say it has opened up a lot more understanding for me ,

Opening up a knee and seeing for myself, all the intricate connections, the layers in the human body, the depth  is truly is amazing, seeing how poor posture damages the body,  As I always say you never stop learning and there is so much more to learn, though what I have learnt from the course will come in extremely useful when treating my clients.

Back To Work Again, After A Very Painful Long Journey.

Back To Work

Some times with a client you take their journey with them in so many ways.

I am always concerned  for my clients and want the best for them, I  try to get them back to fitness and I will fight their corner when they need it, some take a lot longer than others, as I have always said coming back from injury is Baby steps and we have to go a the clients pace, I won’t make false promises,  I will encourage them, and work with them, to move forward with their lives, but in the end it is down to them and the effort they also put into getting there.

Trevor has been one of those clients, his Journey has taken a long time, but his chronic muscular injuries were sustained  over a very long period of time.

Trevor first came to me back in May 2016, he has been back with me on and off since that time,  for further rehabilitation treatment, after we had got through to a level of improvement, allowing  him to be able to deal with things himself, helping him to get fit enough for working again.

I am so pleased to say Trevor has sent me this message he is a great guy and so glad he is now back working.

He has a  great reduction in pain, I know he still has the occasional bad day ,but nothing like he was suffering with and the pain no longer controls him, he is no longer suffering from depression, due to his pain, his life has improved so much and he so deserves it know what he has gone through.

I know its a very late thank you but I wanted you to know , I have got a job at Norse , my knees are still not as great as I would like, but Norse are trying to find a more suitable job for me where its not so hard on them. hope you are both ok no doubt I will see you in the future .

I’ve been involved in manual work most of my life, and for many years (having had two kidney transplants 35yrs ago) I then started experience sever muscular & joint pains. I have taken pain killers, going up the scale and tried various alternative therapies, with no joy till I met you, it was when I brought my daughter for treatment with you, as she was unable to drive due to an injury. A massive thanks Steve for all your hard work in getting me fit enough to work again, I had been off for nearly a year and not seeing any way forward, with various joint muscular and nerve problems, but you sorted them one by one and you never gave up on me.

Thank you for all you have done for me ,and hopefully this will inspire others .

Why Knee Pain Norwich ?

Why Knee Pain Norwich

Most Sports injury  therapist tend to get their clients  after  an injury , dealing with the recovery and rehabilitation, or  a client who is preparing for a certain event.

As a Sports Massage and injury therapist, I have been in a position to help a lot of people with   their recovery due to various injuries, but in 2009.

I found myself in a unique and unhappy position due to  an accident that happened a few years previously.

Then the consequences of it, left further problems hat needed to be dealt with.

My wife Jacqui had been involved in a very bad a car accident in which she had a few injuries one was an impact injury to her left knee , a dislocation of the patella, this had been re-seated, but had become unstable and painful sometimes locking.

My wife had a car accident in which she had an impact injury to her left knee , a dislocation of the patella, this had been re-seated, but had become unstable and painful sometimes locking.

Then in August 2009 the knee locked and she damaged the medial meniscus, a trip to hospital meant an X-ray then an knee arthroscopy ., the findings were not good she was going to have a knee replacement.

Pain can be nerve related , muscular or lastly structural. Remembering that tight shortened muscles will pull on damaged structures e.g. knees and can worsen pain .

I took this personally  and was determined to do all I could to help my wife and find out as much as I could about knee injury , knee replacement and knee pain . I was not going to rely on just, what I had already been taught.

The complex structure of the knee and the workings of the replacement knee were just the beginning, reading books, talking to colleagues helped.

The main aim was to have the muscles supple and prepared for surgery, normal physiotherapy was not going to work as she was in pain and the exercises would only, further damage the injury .

I then met with the inventor of the Bioneuro , with his help and a injury treatment plan in place we then started work on my wife’s knee, the improvements were almost immediate, then when it came to the surgery we knew  her muscles were in the best condition for the surgery, the recovery time was reduced and my wife’s mobility was  improved  greatly.

Bioneuro Sigma Steve Kirby in Use

Then in 2010 we moved to Norwich to  restart my Sports Injury Clinic, business has and is doing very well and I am proud to say I have devolved a great reputation for my working with clients with knee injuries.

I have been asked many times “Why are you so interested in Knee Pain” my answer is “People of all ages can and do suffer from knee pain and dysfunction, but when it is some one close to you then you have to do more, when you have achieved that goal, then it is up to you to help more people” so that is why I am helping so many people in Norwich with knee Pain.

The knee joint it’s self  is a complex  joint with structures , muscles, nerves that orchestrate movement of the knee joint

We can help with pre-op while you are waiting for that hip or knee surgery to keep those muscles supple and help with mobility meaning less medication and more movement, or Post op as sometimes after surgery people find it difficult to get going again and need that bit of hands on treatment to get them on a good recovery path.

All the hands on work using Neuro manipulation techniques, the reading and advice, I took on board, while treating Jacqui , was not set aside, it was stored and reused questioned and evidenced.

I carried on working with my clients ,finding my fascination in knee injury, knee surgery, was becoming more useful, now in a position to  refer my clients  to a brilliant Orthopaedic Surgeon whom I have a great working relationship with .

I know I can offer my clients great treatment to help them if they have any Muscular Skeletal injury, but when it comes to Knees I am sure.

“Being there and being the best to help  clients, with Knee Injury , pre or post Knee Surgery  is One of my main Goals”

Upper, Lower Back & Shoulder Pain,Till He Came To Getfitstayfit Norfolk

Back & Shoulder Pain

Guy is a Skilled hard working Plasterer by trade, he has built up his Local business, Hammond and Fox Plastering to a high standard and is very particular about his work and knows how important it is to get a smooth finish.

As you may know good plasterers are hard to come by, but for a long time Guy has been suffering, after 9 years of pain seeing various practitioners, getting no better, he was getting fed up with how the pain in his Neck, Upper, Lower Back and Shoulders, was affecting his sleep and smooth mobility. He came to Getfitstayfit Norfolk after a very difficult time needing help.

After his treatment this is what he had to say.

This is an Email of how he feels now, and how he feels about Getfitstayfit Norfolk

Hi Steve,

Please find below my thoughts on my treatment received from you these past wks.

I sustained a back injury way back in late 2005 and in the past 9 years I have had treatment from an Osteopath, regular monthly Chiropractic treatment And 3 different NHS Physiotherapists, all giving me a different  diagnosis. The back pain was still there leaving me with a reduced sleep  of 6 hrs per night before the intense pain would wake me up.

I had seen Steve Kirby’s advert in a local magazine and decided to give him a try, he quickly set to work with the Bioneuro therapy system   Sigma Q, on my Upper & Lower back while treating me with Neuromuscular Injury Release  Techniques.

He  told me he was amazed at how long I had been in pain for, he would expect to see improvements in my condition almost straight away, due to the way his Bioneuro therapy machine works.

After the second session I had 3 days of NO PAIN , at all during the night for the first time in 9 long years, including better mobility in my back and shoulders.

With all the previous treatments I have received from different practitioners, NOT ONE of them has worked in being able, to reduce the pain at all, and improve my mobility so much.

I am looking forward to a pain free Christmas after 9 years of back pain and reduced nightly sleep. I have seen many so called experts about my back including chiropractors and NHS physiotherapists with none being able to offer effective treatment. Steve treated me with the Bioneuro therapy and Neuromuscular Techniques he uses ,I am now enjoying fabulous results .

After so many years living with the pain and discomfort I am finally reaching a point where I can get a good nights sleep and the improvement in my back movement has been excellent.

I can thoroughly recommend Steve as I am delighted with the results I have had.

If someone reads this review in a similar situation to me, then I can highly recommend Steve and his machine to you .

Kind regards,

Guy

We are pleased to say Guy did have a pain free Christmas and is having quite a few nights good sleep.

Give your Achilles Tendon a Bit of a Lift? Part 2

Further Problems/ Injuries that occur Paratenonitis is an acute Achilles injury causing inflammation usually due to overuse, affecting the Tendon Sheath or Paratendo “In really acute cases, the tendon can be a sausage shape, because of the severity of the swelling. The area approximately two inches above the Calcaneus attachment is most susceptible. In this area, the Achilles tendon does not have good blood supply or cell activity, so injury can be slow to heal. The tendon receives nutrients from the tendon sheath or Paratendon. When an injury occurs to the tendon, cells from surrounding structures migrate into the tendon to assist in repair. Some of these cells come from blood vessels that enter the tendon to provide direct blood flow to increase healing. With the blood vessels you also get nerve fibres’.

It is believed, that these nerve fibres are the cause of the pain. So while it is healing it will cause you a lot more pain, some say “It is like having an Arrow in your heel” Not very fair but unlike Achilles painful fate, you’re not going to die from it and there are things you can do to help yourself, but recovery from an sever Achilles tendon injury can take anything up to 12 or even 16 months, a long time if you are a runner that is why I always say “Early Intervention is better than long recovery time’s”

So what is Tendinosis? Well the point is most pain within the Achilles tendon, may be classified as Tendinosis. This may be because it involves tendon degeneration, whether it has inflammation or not. In addition, the tendon may become weakened and lose its structure. Aging plays it own part in this process, repetitive injury, or a minor trauma, through occupation or sports. Whatever the reason, “Without proper treatment and healing time, of the area Tendinosis will eventually progress to partial or complete ruptures, if you continue to put high pressure on them, that are physically demanding.

What Can You Do To Help or Prevent Achilles Problems?

Let’s start with the obvious

Preventive exercises aimed at strengthening the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles,

This means,  repetitions of slowly raising and lowering the body while standing on the affected leg, (Calf Raises)   using the opposite arm to assist balance and support if necessary, starting with the heel in a hyperextended position. (Hyperextension is typically achieved by balancing the forefoot on the edge of a step, a thick book, or a barbell weight. so that the point of the heel is a couple of inches below the forefoot. You don’t have to wait till there is a problem to do this exercise use it in your regular stretches,

Don’t take on too much too fast, slowly Increase the intensity and the difficulty of an exercise and running program do not put strain on your Achilles.

An ultimate must here !

Always Use appropriate footwear. The more arch support, the less strain there is on the heel and associated muscles. Wearing heel pads to reduce the strain on the tendon, and remember, if you start to show signs that there is a problem occurring.

Don’t leave it and hope it goes away, you can’t run it off, and it won’t just go away.

Use Standard RICE Treatment with Icecold compression therapy then please seek help. Early intervention can save you from lots of problems later.

If you have an injury and need more advice give us a call, but please don’t leave it.

A few weeks rest or less, from running is better than 12 months or not ever again.

Julia’sTestimonial For Getfitstayfit Norfolk

The Importance of “Fluid Motion when on Horseback

I have Osteoarthritis in my hips and have been under the consultant at the hospital.

I have been suffering severe pain in my right hip/leg.

The consultant was adamant that this was due to the arthritis and at my age refused to carry out a hip replacement.

Still unsure whether the pain was just due to the arthritis I decided to seek further advice. I am a keen horse rider and have not been able to ride since July due to the pain.

Well I visited Steve Kirby and had three sessions on the Bioneuro Dry Therapy System Sigma Q(∑Q)®

The pain eased considerably and I am now riding my horse with little to no  pain.

I will continue to visit Steve until I feel the need to stop, but feel I will need a top up whilst I am still riding.

Steve and his wife Jacqui are great people with a positive outlook on life and I would never have any hesitation in recommending them here’s to a Pain free 2012
