Poorly Knee Update
After years of struggling with my knee and being told I had a lateral meniscal tear on top of having hyper mobilty in my knee joint I finally found out the cause of all my pain.
After a weekend away and long hyke to see Stoodley Pike near Hebden Bridge with my new and caring partner, my knee took a pounding. Excepting a couple of weeks discomfort I got on with dealing with my knee in pain. After eight weeks I finally decided something more was up. Heading to my GP I was referred to the Dereham hospital, which updated my knee to a radial meniscal tear. Time passed by and still no joy with the knee getting better, if anything it got worse.
The my physio at the hospital referred me to get X-rays to see what was going on. After a dramatic visit to A&E at N&N hospital, with a consultant that could do with reading up in the hypocritic oath, trying to extract fluid from my knee without performing an ultrasound … Twice! I was sent home without my X-ray and still in a whole heap of pain which was going from bad to worse. Walking became harder and after a fall I ended up in hospital again. I was told I should not have been discharged and should have had X-rays and possible surgery to see what was going on.
Off to Spire for me.
An appointment was made with Spire in Norwich and this is where the ball finally got rolling. I finally had my X-rays taken, low and behold I found out I was and have been bone on bone for years and I hyke was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The doctor I saw turned out to be my surgeon and informed me I was too young for a total knee replacement but that is what needed to happen to get me back on my fett, forgive the pun.
Four months passed on crutches, great when getting flights to Ireland for new years, jumping all the cues and getting a scissor lift on to the plane. I headed in to Spire to have my first operation in 57 years. The nerves were running high not knowing what to expect but my partner was amazing, with me every step of the way. Sunday lunchtime operation I was back in my room and within a few hours they had me walking on crutches and going up and down stairs. I was discharged the next morning and so the rehab started. Attending Spire and physio sessions the strength in my knee as improving but I was still a way off getting the knee to straighten.
Over to Steve
Back behind the wheel I headed over to see Steve and soon he had me on the treatment table, wired up to his box of tricks once more. Its always amazing watching the mussels in my knee working on themselves. After 45 minutes on the Sigma Q, I was starting to feel some relief in my knee. Walking feels a lot better after just one session. So much so I did my first 3 mile walk at pace only stopping when my knee said that was enough. I’ll be having a few more sessions to keep up the recovery. With more physio appointment at Spire coming up it will be interesting to see what they think about the results. Looking forward to the next session with Steve and getting my life back on track!
