Whiplash is a term used to describe a Neck Injury

Whiplash is a term used to describe a neck injury caused by a sudden movement of the head forwards, backwards or sideways as this client suffered.

It often occurs after a sudden impact such as a road traffic accident. The vigorous movement of the head damages the ligaments and tendons in the neck.

Tendons are tough, fibrous bands that connect muscles to bone. Ligaments are the fibrous connective tissues that link two bones together at a joint.

Whiplash is often a self-limiting condition, meaning it eventually gets better on its own or after some basic treatment.

If you have whiplash, it is better to move your neck rather than keep it still using a neck brace or collar. Your neck may be painful, but keeping it mobile from an early stage will improve its functionality and speed up your recovery. and Painkillers, such as paracetamol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, can be

Chronic Whiplash

This is  According to NHS Choicehttp://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Whiplash/Pages/Introduction.aspx they also say.” Whiplash that lasts for six months or more is sometimes known as chronic whiplash or late whiplash syndrome.”

All this information is fine, but what happens if you are not recovering as well as you should, how long is self- limiting and how long do you have to be in pain ?

This is from a  young man, named Paul,  whom we have treated having had, Whiplash and not recovering. He had suffered a serious chronic whiplash injury /pathology,but is now on his way to a full recovery.

“I’m very grateful to you for what you did for me, after 3 years of pain and thinking this was just something I’d have to live with, you improved the way my body was feeling no end and you certainly started me on the road to recovery, both physically and mentally and it gave me a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Here at Getfitstayfit Norfolk we believe in early intervention, can make a big difference with massage on The Hydrotherm Massage Therapy System and the use of  Bioneuro Therapy System.

We can get into an area that may be difficult, for normal conventional massage. In Paul’s case having been in pain for 3 years should not, have been  be considered as acceptable, coming to see us sooner means earlier intervention not just a wait and see approach, that may leave you in pain for years.

We can help people get back quicker, Please don’t suffer in pain when it does not have to be the case.

Getfitstayfit Norfolk will remember Wimbledon 2013 for its Sports Injuries

Wimbledon

This Wimbledon has been full of surprises main players going out and the amount of injuries, even A shoulder injury just when Steve Darcis had reach a top position, put  him out of the running after beating Nadal. These elite and sub elite players have trainers working with them, due to how they train they are better equipped to avoid injuries, they also have Sports Injury Therapist, to deal with and aid with early intervention, should an injury occur. Being a Neuromuscular  injury Therapist , I know how much sports injury therapists are sought after by professional tennis players .

The problem is how do people who play tennis for recreation, deal with their injuries, they probably have full time jobs , can’t afford the time off work to recover from the injury , if it is a muscular injury i.e. sprain or strain, either to the wrist, shoulder or  elbow, as most of the injuries are upper body, unless there is a full rupture in the muscle .

Then we move onto Rehabilitation, do you know we have, Muscle memory we do and it has been used synonymously with motor learning, which is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition. When a movement is repeated over time, a long-term muscle memory is created for that task, eventually allowing it to be performed without conscious effort. This process decreases the need for attention and creates maximum efficiency within the motor and memory systems, this can be a great thing if you are fit and well as your muscles will work in a fluid motion within your body, but when you are injured, your muscles react differently, they want to tighten up to protect themselves so that they won’t get injured again, some muscles have to take over other muscles work , as the injured muscle wont stretch out , it becomes a habit and a default position.

There is not much the hospital can do.

These injuries can in some cases take longer to heal than a break.

They can be debilitating, If not treated the can leave internal scar tissue.

This can leave weakness it can reoccur.

Soft Tissue injuries do need to be treated.

In most cases people feel the only answer is rest and painkillers, this is not necessarily so,  once it is established that it is  a Musculoskeletal  injury. This is where we come in as Sports Occupational Injury Therapists.  We can help people recover from a Musculoskeletal injury  quicker with early intervention.

Using cutting edge equipment in the form of the Bioneuro along with Neuromuscular Injury Techniques .

Getting into the deep muscles and increasing “Vasodilatation “ opening up blood vessels  quicker than conventional massage, will enhance  recovery so we can get you on the path to full rehabilitation.

Where we can aid you to  get you back to being the Best You Can.!!!

Back pain cost the country 5 million working days a year, will New Guidelines Help ?

Back pain cost the country 5 million working days a year. That is a lot of people in pain over the course of a year. Have a look at the information on the link and make your own mind up whether it is in favour of the patient or just another way to shuffle them round the system , by giving your Doctor a set target date and setting you and them up to fail. New guidelines for the CG88 or the New Pathway, for when a patient is suffering Back Pain. It talks of earlier intervention , but then who is going to intervene, have they put in place the necessary things to make this work?

New guidelines  for the CG88 or the New Pathway, for when a patient is suffering Back Pain.

It talks of earlier intervention , but then who is going to intervene, have they put in place the necessary things to make this work?

Most back pain is best managed by keeping active Remember that good exercise and activity, choose the right sort of activity for you and build on it, this can reduce and prevent back pain. In most cases people have strained muscles in the back, that in itself is painful, the lower back muscles, consisting of your Extensor, Flexor and your Oblique muscles , Low back pain can feel very debilitating, when you feel in pain, you do not want to keep active and do exercise, but you need to Avoid bed rest and get moving but keep it gentle, at the same time please avoid aggravating activities, no digging the garden you need to use the principles of kinetic movement when bending or lifting, in a way that is comfortable for you, using the hips and knees. People talk about “Slipped Discs” this terminology is BAD, your discs Do not slip, they can however Herniate and there is treatment that can help with that. The thoracic spine is the longest region of the spine, it is also the most comple

As many people already know the  waiting list for physiotherapy appointments are already stretched and a lot of the time a  patient is just get given exercises to do, till they can see a physiotherapist,  but due to the pain can’t do the exercise.

Lets get something straight  from the start, your Doctor will do their best for you, but in most cases all they can do is refer you for an MRI as NICE says an X-ray is not the way to go, an X-ray will not show muscular problems,  then you have a choice medication or physiotherapy, all this takes time and referrals, but  to whom ?

Early intervention needs to be just that at the point of need,  not 12-18 weeks down the line, a strategy needs to be there from the beginning and Doctors need the back up, NICE  give options that are fine on paper, but do not seem to have considered how to put this into  practise.

If your in pain you need to get help straight away, a simple thing as a starting point is ICE. Please make sure when you apply an Ice pack you have wrapped it in a tea towel, we don’t want you burning your skin, apply  for 10- 15 minutes every 2-3 hours yes at the outset you may need painkillers to help, but they are not a long term solution. Folks Neuromuscular Injury Therapy was designed for this sort of intervention and a good Injury Therapist can help.

Your Nervous system is the controller and throughout your body you have signalling stations, these are your Proprioceptors, they are at special points in the body, sending the information telling your body how and when it should move, without them we would become dysfunctional, we would not have coordination and would bump into things. Proprioceptors send back all the valuable feedback so the nervous system responds and recruits muscle appropriately, creating tension or force that will then pull on the fascia that will in turn result in coordinated movement. This is why it is so important to keep muscles flexible; they will then be able to allow the Proprioceptors to keep sending the right messages.

Why do you think Sports people go to them?

I have found over the years in this business that with  Early intervention, from Neuromuscular  Manipulation, Injury Therapy and Dealing first with the injury, then the whole person, going onto light kinetic exercise , working with the client, has a more positive and beneficial result ,than giving them a list of exercise to do from a sheet of paper.

Using cutting edge equipment to aid me, having both Medical and other Sport injury Colleagues, to call on for advice and if necessary, further treatment for the client, has also been beneficial.

Are you investing in your Arteries ?

Arteries

Are you investing in your Arteries and long term well-being ? Do you know how exercise  and Neuromuscular Injury Techniques will help ?

Recently hearing a very well respected Cardiologist speak on how “Arthrosclerosis” is a creeping insidious problem from an early age of life if we are not careful. Staying fit and well, not smoking is of course is one answer .Obesity and alcohol intake combined air pollution, are other factors that damage the well being of our arteries.

The  up to date medical research says  Exercise helps prevent Atherosclerosis in different ways. It keeps arteries healthy by dealing  with the  Cholesterol issues, it also reduces other risk factors such as  Atherosclerosis, Blood clots, High blood Pressure, Diabetes, Obesity, and Stress.

Staying fit and well, not smoking is of course is one answer .Obesity and alcohol intake combined air pollution, are other factors that damage the well being of our arteries.

Regular exercise also helps arteries by boosting the production of Nitric Oxide  by the cells lining the arteries, which helps circulation, Low levels of nitric oxide production are important in protecting organs such as the liver from ischemic damage.

Even in fit people who are free of the effects of  Atherosclerosis, age takes its toll on arteries. As you age, arteries become stiffer, stickier, and narrower. Italian scientists found that in people who exercised regularly, age had a much smaller effect on arteries.

Neuromuscular Release Techniques along with Sports Therapy  Massage is part of my field and maintaining peoples well being along with recovery after injury is a large part of it .

Dale G. Alexander, LMT, MA, PhD ,In a recent “Massage Today” article, Alexander describes how Sports massage can literally create more space for the heart within the thorax. In the article Alexander explains.

“This is achieved by increasing the suppleness and length of the soft tissues both within the chest and those of the outer wall, enhancing the mobility of the thoracic joints, and by reducing the pressure within the cavity itself.”

Based on this premise, freeing restrictions found in the sternum, rib and thoracic areas will help the heart function at maximum capacity, thus improving overall cardiovascular health.

What is also interesting Korean researchers found that Sports Therapy massage had an impact on the autonomic nervous system – a system integrally tied to cardiovascular health.

Besides increasing blood circulation, the massage therapy strokes of Effleurage, Kneading and Tapotement stimulate skin receptors that send messages of relaxation to the central nervous system. These reflexes cause Vasodilatation: where the blood vessels widen to decrease blood pressure and heart rate.

The Neuromuscular Techniques and Bioneuro Therapy System that we use at Getfitstayfit Norfolk helps more than ever for patients to gain that very positive clinical outcome to help  prevent those sinister  problems which could affect us all.

Ankle Injuries Were a Major setback for Running and Cycling Enthusiast

Running and Cycling Enthusiast

Ian came to Getfitstayfit Norfolk on advice of one of his friends, Ian loves his Running and Cycling , he had worked so hard to achieve already, but then to suffer injuries were a major setback for him  and he took pretty hard, as he wanted to do the London Duathlon again in 2013.

He really did not think I could help him , on first meeting this very reluctant and very down man,  I knew I had to get him back he was going to be a challenge, but seeing how well he is doing now it was well worth it.

Hi Steve,

I felt the need to thank you for your continued help in with your treatment of my calf and Achilles injuries and now with your help with my continued maintenance.

Hi Steve, I felt the need to thank you for your continued help in with your treatment of my calf and Achilles injuries and now with your help with my continued maintenance.

“As you know I first came to you with the opinion I would never run again due to constant pain in my Achilles  and Calves.”

This was also making me very depressed, due to not being able to run and not fully understanding why I was getting constant injuries.

My treatment started with the Bioneuro Therapy System Sigma Q(ΣQ)® which instantly gave relief to the problem areas and meant I could slowly ease back in to light training, after a few sessions on the Bioneuro Therapy System Sigma Q(ΣQ)® you thought it would be a good idea to combine the treatment with Neuromuscular Release Techniques  which included stretching my ITB, this combination therapy made a huge difference and I was soon back to regular running and cycling and with the ongoing maintenance

The morning of the 8th September 2013 was a beautiful morning, we at Getfitstayfit Norfolk had been looking forward to the day. It was the day of The Braydeston 5K Fun Run , this is an even organised by Kirk Wilson in aid of Cancer Research, we are happy to be one of the sponsors , working at the run with Pre & Post Massage, we had quite a few people take up the offer of both.

“I am now back to my best and getting close to hitting my 5K PB and I’m training for a Marathon in October and a 154 mile 1 day endurance cycle challenge in June.”

Thanks again and see you soon Ian.

Leg,Feet and Necrotic Tissue Injury.

Necrotic Tissue Injury

Patricia came to us with a few problems, regarding her walking “Her Gait”, her Feet, also with her Lower Back ,

She also had problems getting up from a sitting position to standing , she also had had several falls , but one problem she did have was due to a fall ,that went on to cause  “Necrotic Tissue Injury “ this is a form of Degloving, due to her falling on to a three pin  plug and it sticking completely into her leg.  In older people it takes a lot longer to heal that younger people, Patricia’s leg had been left with a very large dark brown area with no nerve sensation in the area , this had not improved for almost twelve years.

Since using the Bioneuro Therapy System on her,  We are now seeing great improvements with Patricia and the change in the skin colour it is now going pink she is also now regaining the feeling of sensation in her leg in the area of her leg that had been damaged is just one of them.

We know that it will take time and a lot of work on our part and Patricia’s, we do know we will get her a lot fitter with a lot more movement and further regeneration.

What makes Getfitstayfit Norfolk Different ?

What makes Getfitstayfit Norfolk Different

A question that I have been asked ,and no doubt will be asked again is

“What makes Getfitstayfit Norfolk different from others “

As an Injury Clinic first and foremost, the people I treat come to me with an injury.

Be it Sports or Occupational, Injuries, not necessarily for a basic  massage, although we do use, Sports & Remedial massage, as part of the treatment.

I am a Neuromuscular Injury Therapist,  I use all the necessary Techniques in Sports Injury Therapy Treatment

What my patients want  is to not be in pain, or have to take pain killers ,getting higher dosages making them unable to work or get on with their day to day life.

They don’t want to wait up to 12-18 weeks down the line to see a physiotherapist, while their injury is getting worse and restricting them.

What they need is someone to help immediately , understand their situation, listen to them about what is wrong,  take action to alleviate the problem and get them back to being themselves again.

“We are there for our clients at their point of need, that is what makes Getfitstayfit Norfolk different.”

Folks I have read a lot of comments in reference to Sports Massage Therapist, or Soft Tissue Therapist not being able to open just yet . In all my 30 years of being a therapist I have never known so many of my colleague’s to be so despondent and under valued and it saddens me, because I know how much work they do

London Marathon 2012 to Braydeston5K With Getfitstayfit Norfolk.

London Marathon 2012

Last year Getfitstayfit Norfolk looked after some of the runners of the London Marathon 2012, with a fantastic team of other therapist.

This year we had the pleasure of looking after two fantastic guys, Marcus and Kirk both running for Cancer charities. Kirk is our own  local,  Braydeston5k run original organiser, most people know Kirks story and all the reasons he has done the Braydeston 5K, but this year he also wanted to do the London Marathon ,despite the fact that  unfortunately he also had to have knee surgery and doing the Braydeston 5k run was in doubt let alone running the London Marathon, but still he was determined to do both.

This is where Getfitstayfit Norfolk came in to Kirk’s life we started looking after him just before the Braydeston 5k last year and continued to look after him throughout this year up to and after the London Marathon.

We treated Kirk with the Bioneuro Therapy System and Neuromuscular Injury Techniques, to help keep his muscles flexible, Kirk ran both the Braydeston 5k then he went on to run the London Marathon in a fantastic time.

Kirk came back to us on the Monday and despite the run he had just done  his muscle tone was excellent with no sign of problems that a lot of runners suffer. We must admit  we were expecting some, but after a treatment session he felt great.

Kirk has written his own blog on his day follow the link to have a read for those of you considering a Marathon run or you want to understand how they do it  it is a great read.

Fit For Work in Norwich after Muscular Related Injury, helped by Getfitstayfit Norfolk

Muscular Related Injury

We are dealing with muscular related injuries on a regular basis from back and shoulder injuries to hip and knee injuries.

Today on the news we were told about the new Government scheme called Fit For Work.

They say “Sick leave leads to long-term absence from work in too many cases, the government says. It hopes a new scheme will get people off benefits and back to work much more quickly. But will it work, and will it be fair?”.

This is one of the questions asked toady as the government is looking at the Fit for work scheme, this is the link to the BBC Report http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22033655

One remark made by Dame Carol Black Adviser on Health and Work was “If you have been out of work for 20 weeks then you have a very low chance of returning to your own job”

It is difficult for people with injury sometimes to get back to work due to muscular issues and sometimes the medication they are put on to help with the pain.can cause a problem. Here at Getfitstayfit Norfolk we are having great results getting people back and feeling the Freedom of Pain.

“The Multifidus is a very deep muscle in the human body and an excessively hard muscle to work on manually, but with treating Trevor with The Bioneuro Sigma Q, a piece of equipment that uses electrical frequency and can reach into deep muscles without being invasive, at the same time aiding neurotransmitters and blood supply to the area.”

We can help with Muscular Skeletal  issues Repetitive Strain issues  also with Stress issues. All these things can cause long term problems leading to more time off work that we want to have. It is not always people who work in mainly manual related jobs that have issues with Back Pain.

To do this people, after the initial  trauma related  injury,  have to get back moving and exercising, but what holds people  back from doing this is pain, with muscular pain that  often comes from very tight/ hyper-tonic muscles, due to scar tissue created  after the injury , this in turn can prevent full rehabilitation, this is a cycle that  needs to be broken down, so people can move pain free.

Here at Getfitstayfit Norfolk  we believe early intervention with massage and the equipment that we use,  have extremely good results.

We are dealing with muscular related injuries on a regular basis from back and shoulder injuries to hip and knee injuries. We are getting people back quicker, fitter and able to return to work, in a shorter time,

We also deal with a maintenance  and rehabilitation program so they don’t end up in the same situation again.

Free From Pain “Nanna Ooooh” Say’s After Treatment at Getfitstayfit Norfolk

Free From Pain

In our Local Village Book one of our clients sent in a message about her treatment with us due to the fact that she had found out about us in The Village book so we thought we would share it with you.

She writes” I went to Steve at Getfitstayfit Norfolk after reading about his Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy treatment as I was in considerable pain with what I thought was Sciatica, he did some simple  tests  to see what was happening, then after Steve’s treatment ,using the Bioneuro Therapy Treatment ( it is a kind of electric pad device which really hits the spot) .

Steve was most professional and explained about how the pain was caused and his proposed treatment . The best thing is my little grandson always called me Nanna Ooooh as I always said Ooooh when I stood up from a sitting position such was the pain however he said he is now going to call me just Nanna and we can enjoy playing all kinds of games together.”

I am now free of pain and able to walk with ease.
